Why should academic study lead anywhere; is it not for its own sake? The process through which the student travels is a journey of discovery; of oneself and of a critical appreciation of those things of which life consists. It allows a consideration of life experiences as described by a variety of contributors to a literary cannon; these may be subjective, distorted or invented but are routed (rooted) in the human condition; something we all experience, whether literary student or not. Academic study then is a luxury and a privilege for those few in the world who have both means and access, the responsibility therefore is how one can contribute to human experience as a consequence of such study, for in isolation both study and human existence is an avoidable poverty. Ask oneself how one can make what one has come to know through study of benefit to both oneself and the wider world of which we are a part and perhaps study may continue until the journey however long is complete.
